The Andes region in Peru is believed to harbor many unknown species however, it is one of the most poorly collected areas in America (Gentry, 1993). ![]() This treatment was based on intensive field work in Colombia and Ecuador, but unfortunately not in the remaining Andean countries. The most recent attempt to clarify species identities within the genus was included in the Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas (Henderson et al., 1995), in which 11 species were recognized. parvifrons, the two most widespread species of Ceroxylon (from Venezuela to Bolivia). In the last 30 years, five species have been described as new and many names have been reduced to synonymy, most of them corresponding to morphotypes of C. Following its description, the genus was monographed by Burret (1929), who recognized 16 species and mentioned other three names of dubious identity. is distributed all along the Andean montane forest, from Venezuela and Colombia to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, ranging from 800 to 3500 m in elevation.
