Personally, I think too many people do not control the recirculation rate well enough which causes much of the grain bed compaction and need for raking the bed to keep it fluffy. I am looking into it a bit, but have no real driving factor to make the change. There have been some users who have taken the knob off from the cover and replaced it with a spray nozzle. My mash/lauter efficiency is averaging in the mid-80's so I don't feel I am missing anything there. I think the recommendation may be directed at store bought crushed grains where the crush may be a bit more coarse that I grind my grist.
